Most "local" support... clubs/towns with massive attendance to population ratio?
Strange topic i know.

Was in Macclesfield today. Was surprised to see a huge amount of people walking round in Macclesfield Town replica gear, and a lot of shops/vans etc with rosettes, flags etc. Not bad for a non-league club. Was expecting mostly Manc teams/Liverpool, and saw none.

To be fair they have a population of 51,482 and an average attendance of 2,971, and can't be many if any fans from outside the town, so that's likely 5-6% of the population at a Macclesfield home game.

According to google, on any given home game, 27% of Burnley's population, in theory, is at Turf Moor (attendance of 20k, population of 73k)... are there many Burnley fans not from Burnley? Can't be many.

Also maybe an extreme example but Forest Green have a record attendance of 2,430, and the population of Nailsworth is 5,794... so if they all lived in Nailsworth that would be nearly half of the town at a game. Guessing not every Forest Green fan comes from there though.

Any more examples?

Makes Oxford United's 8,500 ish from a city of 150,000 or so look bad.

My neighbours were Chelsea and Spurs, though I was not actually in Oxford at that point. And lots of people who could not give a toss about football.

Roughly the same proportion as Macclesfield no? (My maths is shit)

True

I think I was reacting to the Burnley one (had a friend whose dad play for them and seem a decent bunch off the pitch) and to be fair Oxford the city is only part of the population.

Don't think there is another League team in Oxfordshire (about 680,000). Could be wrong.

Are you looking to do a burglary and working out how many houses are empty on match day

Altho if you've ever been to Burnley you'd see why it wouldn't work, you'd come out of most houses poorer than you went in

Thats usually when Liverpool players houses are targeted when they are away in Europe

ps Liverpool are in Paris on May 28 for the Champions League final & Mo Salah lives at 37 Calm Down Avenue, Bootle

Burnley's support comes from a lot of towns around them too - Nelson, Colne, Accrington - all huge shitholes as well

Villarreal, the Champions League semi finalists, have a population of 50,000 in their city, and sell out a 25,000 stadium. Beat that.

Yes, Villarreal are just across the river from Castellón which has a total urban population of 174,000 inhabitants.

Agreed, the worst towns in the UK. Although the surrounding countryside is some of the nicest.

Re: Most "local" support... clubs/towns with massive attendance to population ratio?
You're always likely to get more 'focused' support from small, one club towns- especially if they are far away from a 'big' city and club. You can get to the local team and it's affordable and part of the actual community, and families are likely to have been there for generations. The must support a 'big club' disease hasn't quite infected them yet. They are still in the phase that West Ham was possibly in about 60 years ago where most of the locals grow up supporting their local club.

There's also likely to be quite a large catchment area surrounding the town where the club is based. Nailsworth is pretty tiny but has a pretty big catchment area from surrounding towns and villages. I know someone who lives round there and he just goes as a 'hobby'. Doesn't really support them but it's fairly cheap football close to his home and gets him away from his wife for a few hours.

Most FGR fans are from Stroud and Stonehouse

I think I read somewhere that Belgium had the highest ratio per population that attended football matches.
